Inside Line Promotions – MESQUITE, Texas (April 25, 2016) – Jason Sides capped the Texas Outlaw Nationals with a top-10 result on Saturday at Devil’s Bowl Speedway.
It was a great end to a solid doubleheader for Sides, who has four top-10 finishes in his last six World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series races.
“It wasn’t too bad of a weekend,” he said. “For all the rain they had the race track was in pretty good shape.”
The event began on Friday with Sides qualifying seventh quickest. He then finished where he started – third – in a heat race to narrowly miss locking into the dash.
“We just missed it ever so slightly,” he said. “That started us one spot out of the dash in the feature. We got going around the bottom and it was pretty good early. Then the track widened out. I’m not sure if it laid a little rubber or got cleaned off where you could run around the top. I stayed on the bottom too long. There were some ruts on the bottom in turns three and four so you had to be really careful. I fell back to 13th or 14th, but got a couple of cars back to finish 12th.”
The doubleheader concluded on Saturday with Sides setting quick time during qualifying for the first time this season.
“We were the third car out, which was a plus,” he said. “That also put us on the pole of the first heat. I think the earlier heats were a little better because the track didn’t dry out as much. We were really good around the bottom in turns one and two. In turns three and four you could run anywhere. I got the heat win to make the dash.”
Unfortunately, the dash draw didn’t fall in his favor. The highest number – six – was pulled to start Sides on the outside of the third row. He finished in that position to start the $20,000-to-win main event sixth.
“I fell back a few spots,” he said. “On some of those restarts they get so hairy. Late in the race we had a red flag and we had lost a few spots. We gained a few spots back with those late yellows. The tires were still up, but they were blistered real bad. I got a little loose and I think we lost some air in the left rear and we gained some stagger. We were up to sixth, but Brad Sweet got us at the end and I hung on to seventh.”
The seventh-place result marked the second straight year Sides has wrapped up the prestigious event with a top 10.
He will resume World of Outlaws action this Tuesday at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark., before races on Friday at Salina Highbanks Speedway in Salina, Okla., and Saturday at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 in Pevely, Mo., for the Spring Classic.
Sides has never raced with a 410ci engine at I-30 Speedway, which is hosting its first World of Outlaws race in more than 20 years. Additionally, he placed second last year during the Spring Classic.
