CG Motorsports- Glenpool, Ok. (March 30, 2016) Matt Covington wrapped this past weekend up with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour by capturing the series points lead.
Covington powered his A-Rock Materials/ Triple X chassis to a 7th place finish at the Cotton Bowl Speedway on Friday, and then earned a 5th place finish on Saturday at the Bronco Raceway.
"It was a great, solid weekend for us,” Covington said, “We really need to be consistent this season and so far, we have been able to do that. I knew going in it was going to be a challenging weekend, especially at two tracks we didn’t have many laps on.”
Covington began the 1st night at Cotton Bowl Speedway in Paige, Texas, finishing 4th in the heat race. That earned him the 16th starting spot in the feature.
From the 16th starting spot, Covington had his work cut out. From the drop of the green, Matt began methodically working towards the top-10. By the features end, Matt found himself staying out of trouble with a fast race car, crossing the checkers in 7th place.
"I knew we were going to have to battle our way forward after starting 16th,” stated Matt. “I was wanting a top-5, but it’s harder to advance once you’re in the top-10 because of the talent running up front. We just stayed out of the wrecks and used the speed of the car to get every position we could. I did my best to keep the car straight and our nose clean until the end. I would have liked to get a few more spots but I just didn’t force anything. We salvaged a good points night by finishing in 7th.
After Cotton Bowl on Friday, Matt and the team made the trek to Bronco Raceway Park for Saturday night’s action.
“Saturday was also another good night for us,” said Matt. “We got some passing points in the heat which gave us a good starting position in the feature and was able to come home with a 5th place effort.”
Covington was able to rally from 7th to 3rd in his heat. That ranked him with enough points to be in the re-draw for the main event. He grabbed the 4 pill, starting him outside row 2 for the feature.
Matt went to work once the green flag waved and found himself fighting with the leaders on the heavy and locked down surface. Covington and the leaders had some challenges with lappers as the race progressed due to the extreme moisture and speed in the racing surface. Even after losing a spot in traffic, Matt kept pushing for positions in his T&L Foundry/Wesmar powered machine and ultimately settled for 5th place.
“The track was tricky in the feature,” Covington said. “The moisture in the track was extreme and the racing groove wasn’t too wide. It was really hard to pass unless you were able to slip by in lap traffic. I tried once to go around a lapper on the top and it cost me a spot. I tried the top later on in the race but was just a little too conservative and lost another spot. But we ended up with 5th and another solid night for us. I am happy to take over the points lead and pursue our season goal, which is to be more consistent and better our points position from last year. The season is just getting rolling, but after the top-5s we have had lately, I am itching to get our first win of the year. I want to keep the momentum going while being consistent and fighting for wins, especially on the nights that we have a good starting spot. We will see what the weather does and hopefully we get the Rock n Roll 50 in at West Memphis this weekend.”
