Inside Line Promotions – ABBOTTSTOWN, Pa. (March 28, 2016) – Ryan Smith has elected not to chase points for the first time in his sprint car career.
“We don’t have a real plan,” he said. “If we want to run two or three nights a week we will. We’ll pick and choose time trial shows and race when we want to. I want to get out to Ohio when it makes sense. I’d like to get to the Knoxville Nationals and back to the Kings Royal. We’ll follow the World of Outlaws when they are close.”
Smith is coming off a strong weekend in his home state as he powered to a pair of podium finishes in Pennsylvania.
“It was a good weekend,” he said. “It was definitely a confidence booster not only for myself but the whole team. We worked hard all winter to get everything together so to knock out two top fives in our second and third races will hopefully lead to a strong year.”
Smith kicked off last weekend on Friday at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, where he finished third in a heat race to make the feature redraw. He then pulled the No. 4 during the random redraw to line up on the outside of the second row for the main event.
“I was running third until the first caution about eight to 10 laps in,” he said. “The racing was around the top. There was no bottom or middle. I left the wing back on the restart and tried to roll the middle underneath (Brent) Marks. I lost momentum and (Aaron) Ott, (Brian) Montieth and (Greg) Hodnett pounced on me. It was a good night overall though.”
Smith held on for his first top five of the season.
On Saturday he ventured to Lincoln Speedway, where he qualified fifth and finished third in a heat race to make the feature inversion. This time the No. 4 was drawn so the top four cars were inverted for the main event.
“They drew a four so I started fifth,” he said. “I ran fourth until (Danny) Dietrich got me on the last lap. We were in contention both nights. We just need to make a little better decisions behind the wheel and we’ll be right there to battle for the win.”
Smith is heading to Williams Grove Speedway this Friday and Port Royal Speedway in Port Royal, Pa., on Saturday.
