Inside Line Promotions – TULARE, Calif. (March 14, 2016) – Chase Johnson advanced into the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series main event at Thunderbowl Raceway for the first time in his career last Saturday.
Despite bad luck prior to the green flag, Johnson posted a top 20 during only his third-ever World of Outlaws feature start driving for Shawn and Cyndi Thomas.
“It was definitely a great night for us,” Johnson said. “We went to Tulare quite a bit last year with the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series so I felt confident going into the night.”
That showed in qualifying as Johnson timed in fifth quickest out of his group on the fast track.
“It was a tricky night,” he said. “When we got there the track didn’t look like it had that much moisture. I didn’t think we were in for a heavy, wet night. As soon as cars hit the track you could tell how much moisture was in the track. We knew that qualifying would be a big part of the night and we were able to lay down a good lap.”
Johnson then placed fourth in a heat race to lock himself into the 13th starting position for the main event. Unfortunately, his left rear tire went flat as he was pushed onto the track prior to the start of the feature.
“Right when we went on the track we had a left rear flat so we had to rush into the work area,” he said. “We got that changed and got back out in time to start the race, but we had to start in the rear. It was tough to make any moves or go forward in a hurry starting that far back, but we salvaged a good finish with the Outlaws.”
Johnson picked up a handful of positions to post a 19th-place finish.
Last Friday’s race was rained out.
Johnson is slated to compete this Thursday at Delta Speedway in Stockton, Calif., in an outlaw kart for McClish Motorsports and Saturday at the Southern Illinois Center in Du Quoin, Ill., for the Shamrock Classic with the USAC National Midget Series with Matt Wood Motorsports.
