Inside Line Promotions – LAKE STEVENS, Wash. (March 1, 2016) – Austen Wheatley will make his 2016 season debut this week with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series.
Wheatley is slated to compete on Thursday and Friday at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas in Las Vegas and Sunday at Arizona Speedway in Queen Creek, Ariz., for the NAPA Desert Shootout.
“It’s been so long since I’ve raced, but I feel so ready for it,” he said. “The end of last year went really good. We qualified well and ran well. I’m really, really comfortable with these cars and it showed.”
Wheatley, who switched to a KPC chassis last summer, is coming off a strong finish to the year. He scored a career-best seventh-place result with the World of Outlaws last August at Nodak Speedway in Minot, N.D., and timed in third quickest in his group during World of Outlaws qualifying at the Gold Cup Race of Champions last September at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif.
“I think the whole West Coast swing to start the season gets easier and easier each year because you know what to expect,” he said. “At first Las Vegas is an intimidating place to start because it’s so fast, but we’re getting more comfortable there.”
This is the seventh straight season Wheatley has competed at the fast half-mile oval with the World of Outlaws. Last year he made the A Main both nights for the first time in his career.
“The engines are really important and you have to have a really good car,” he said. “Hopefully we can capitalize on the comfort and speed we had at the end of last season to make both the shows and put together good finishes.”
Wheatley will wrap up this weekend on Sunday by making his debut at Arizona Speedway.
“I don’t know anything about the track, but it’s always fun to head to new tracks,” he said. “I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
