Inside Line Promotions – GERMANTOWN, Tenn. (Nov. 23, 2015) – Sammy Swindell has been winning sprint car races for four decades.
A scaled-down schedule in 2015 didn’t hamper that routine as Swindell picked up four feature wins – two in a 410ci sprint car, one in a 360ci sprint car and one in a midget. After announcing his retirement from full-time racing in August 2014, Swindell returned to the seat in a limited capacity this year.
“I always thought I’d do something,” he said. “It might have been real small. I didn’t really know at that point what I wanted to do. I did retire from the way I was doing it. The only thing the same is that I’m driving. I’m out from under all the day-to-day operations that you have to do to run a team. That’s what I’ve done for a long time with most of the owners I’ve driven for. Now it’s more just the driver part of it and that suits me that I don’t have to be involved every day.”
Swindell opened the year in January at Tulsa Expo Raceway in Tulsa, Okla., where he won the Vacuworx Invitational Race of Champions to kick off the 29th annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals in his first race in approximately five months.
“It’d been so long since I’d driven anything,” he said. “The way things fell into place for that race, it was a lot of things going into that. That gave me a lot of confidence going down the road.”
Swindell then picked up his first winged sprint car feature victory on Aug. 1 at Randolph County Raceway in Moberly, Mo., where he charged from sixth in the Donnie Cooper entry.
Swindell, who also powered to four top 10s with the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series in June while he filled in for an injured Jason Johnson, found his dream opportunity in the middle of the summer.
“The biggest thing (about the 2015 season) was the way some things came together,” he said. “I wasn’t expecting a lot of things that happened, especially with me joining CJB Motorsports. I was just going to do whatever. If there wasn’t anything as far as racing sprint cars, there’s always other opportunities to do other forms of racing. The way things worked out it kept me in a sprint car.”
Swindell earned a pair of feature victories with CJB Motorsports as the team swept the $25,000-to-win Jackson Nationals the first weekend of September at Jackson Speedway in Jackson, Minn.
“The way we went about it, it wasn’t like a normal situation,” he said. “It was so much different than what we’d done with that car. It came down to a lot of people coming together. To get the results that we did was the best it could be. That was one of the biggest weekends of the year.”
Swindell finished the season with two wins, eight top fives and nine top 10s in 17 features with the team.
“We weren’t going to easy races or cherry picking,” he said. “We ran at the toughest places against the toughest teams and had some really good finishes. I’m grateful for the opportunity and I’m looking forward to next year.”
Swindell said his tentative 2016 schedule will include approximately 40 races for CJB Motorsports as well as the Chili Bowl Nationals.
“I wouldn’t mind running a late model or running a modified once or twice,” he said. “We’ll just do whatever I think would be fun.”
