Inside Line Promotions – STOCKTON, Calif. (Oct. 25, 2015) – Giovanni Scelzi used last weekend’s Turkey Bowl as a testing ground.
“We wanted to test for the Tulsa Shootout and we only went to Friday’s race,” he said. “On Saturday I went to Hanford to help Dominic with his sprint car.”
The younger Scelzi took advantage of Friday’s micro sprint competition at Delta Speedway, where the competition included a heat race and a qualifier for the 40 competitors.
“It was good for us because we’ve struggled during qualifying when normally the track is hooked up and we’ve been down on power,” he said. “We can race fine. This was a good layout for us because all you had to do was race.”
Scelzi led all 10 laps of a heat race after starting on the outside of the front row. That lined him up on the outside of Row 2 for a qualifier.
“I jumped to third right on the start,” he said. “It was follow the leader on the bottom so we didn’t have an opportunity to gain anymore positions.”
Scelzi’s third-place result ranked him third in overall points out of the 40 drivers and would have put him in the pole shuffle, which determined the first three rows of Saturday’s feature.
“I think we’re good and we learned some things,” he said. “We’re going to try some more things in Visalia next month so I’m excited for that.”
Scelzi will return to action on Nov. 20-21 at Plaza Park Raceway in Visalia, Calif., where he will compete in both wing and nonwing.
