Inside Line Promotions – MESQUITE, Texas (Oct. 22, 2015) – Brandon Hanks narrowly missed the show both nights during the 42nd annual Winter Nationals.
Hanks placed fifth – only two positions out of a transfer - in a Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour B Main each night at Devil’s Bowl Speedway last weekend.
“The only fault was that we may have started a little behind both nights and couldn’t keep up,” he said. “Both nights we had to run the B Main and the car was really good. Just circumstances wouldn’t go in our favor.”
Friday began with Hanks advancing from fifth to fourth place in a heat race. That lined him up on the outside of the second row for a B Main.
“We battled Sam (Hafertepe Jr.) for third and ended up pulling away from him,” he said. “The white flag comes out and then a caution comes out. Tony Bruce Jr. had been running the bottom and made a bunch of ground up. I didn’t know it and had been running the top. When we restarted he went down there and got by us as did Sam. Had it stayed green we would have been in the feature.”
The variables weren’t any better on Saturday. Hanks finished fifth in a heat race, which relegated him to the seventh starting position in a B Main. Unfortunately, the track had already began to take rubber and passing was at a premium.
“On Saturday we were fast in the B Main,” he said. “We just couldn’t get up there in time. It was disappointing. It rubbered up, especially in turns three and four. You could run the bottom wide open. It was fun how fast it was, but it wasn’t fun when the guys in front of you are going as fast as you are.”
Hanks will take this weekend off before competing Oct. 28-31 at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark., for the 28th annual Comp Cams Short Track Nationals with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
