Inside Line Promotions – KILGORE, Texas (Oct. 13, 2015) – Brandon Hanks was a little more than a lap away from registering a top-five finish during his debut at Lonestar Speedway last Saturday.
Unfortunately, Hanks and the David Smith Racing team were derailed by a blow tire coming to the white flag during the ASCS Red River Region event.
“I thought I saw something come across the race track, but I didn’t think anything of it until the tire blew out,” he said. “I was happy with how we were doing and then it was undone.”
Hanks had kicked off the night by maneuvering from sixth to third place during a heat race. That earned him a spot in the feature redraw, where Hanks pulled the No. 3 during the random draw to start the main event on the inside of the second row.
“We were really fast in the heat and that put us in the redraw,” he said. “Then we actually drew good for a change. We did the same thing with the setup we did at Timberline (the week before) and I really liked it. I’m really comfortable with it. I felt pretty good going into the main event.”
Hanks lost several positions on the opening lap of the feature before he rebounded.
“I had a bad start,” he said. “When we started we were four wide at the flag stand. That jacked us all up. I was probably eighth after that start. We got back up to fifth. The track started rubbering up about 10 laps in and it was really hard to pass. Everybody was fighting for the same territory.”
Hanks had cracked the top five when the tire issue forced him to a stop on the final lap. He was credited with a 13th-place result.
“It wasn’t wore out,” he said. “It popped because we ran over something. There was a big hole in the sidewall of the tire.”
Hanks will return to action this Friday and Saturday at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, for the 42nd annual Winter Nationals with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
