Inside Line Promotions – FORNEY, Texas (Oct. 12, 2015) – Travis Rilat hopes to put the lessons learned last year during his debut at Thunderbowl Raceway to use this weekend at the 22nd annual Trophy Cup.
Rilat and car owner Richard Saumure will return to the unique track in Tulare, Calif., this Thursday, Friday and Saturday for the first time since the duo debuted at last year’s Trophy Cup.
“That was certainly a memorable event,” Rilat said. “The track is very different from anywhere I’ve raced. You have to be up against the wall to be fast and it can be very tricky. There’s a fine line between riding the cushion and slamming the wall.”
Rilat found that speed during the finale of last season’s event. He won the D Main before advancing from 11th to fourth during the C Main. That transferred him into the back of the B Main, where he charged from 24th to sixth place – only two spots out of transferring into the main event – before crashing coming to the white flag.
“We hit on something the final night last year before we were involved in the crash,” he said. “Hopefully we can pick up right where we left off before crashing and put ourselves in a good position from the start this weekend.”
Rilat has recorded four victories and seven podium finishes in his last 13 races with Saumure.
“We’ve been fast all year and have really hit our stride toward the end of the summer,” Rilat said. “I think we can head into this weekend as contenders and given a little luck and some good decisions, we can run up front.”

“It’s kind of funny how I met (Shark owner) Marc Huson when I went up there to Washington for an ASCS National Tour race,” Rilat said. “I was wandering around talking on my cell phone and saw a sprint car next door. I walked over, looked around and introduced myself.
“He’s been a great friend. He was instrumental with a support group for me and my family when I was in the hospital up there. He and his wife helped us out in a hard time. As far as his engine skills go, he’s one of the best in the country. There’s only a handful of great engine builders across the country and I consider him one of the best.”
