Inside Line Promotions – GREAT BEND, Kan. (Oct. 6, 2015) – Zach Blurton put together his best campaign in a sprint car this season.
Blurton scored his first career sprint car championship by winning the United Rebel Sprint Series Kansas Region and he recorded his second straight runner-up finish in the URSS National standings. He also tied a season high with three feature victories.
“We improved from last year,” he said. “I got another year under my belt and learned a lot. We had consistent finishes. We finished in the top 10 almost every race. I gained more experience and did better reaching my goals.
“I’ve run the URSS series for four or five seasons. To finally win a championship is awesome. Next year if everything works out hopefully we can win the national deal.”
Consistency led Blurton to the title and it was the backbone for his breakout season. Blurton earned top-five finishes in more than half of his races and he placed in the top 10 during all but four features.
That consistency led to a trio of victories, including the Wheatshocker Nationals on July 12 at RMP Speedway in Hays, Kan.
“The Wheatshocker Nationals was a big show and one of the URSS National events,” he said. “With how much we’ve struggled in Hays, to finally do well there is awesome. Also, winning at WaKeeney Speedway (in WaKeeney, Kan.) was pretty cool too because that was without my dad. He makes a lot of the calls on the setup. To do that I can have some confidence setting up the car myself.”
Blurton also finished fourth out of nearly 100 drivers during a preliminary night of the RaceSaver IMCA Sprint Nationals at Eagle Raceway in Eagle, Neb., in early September and he took advantage of a rare 360ci start by placing third at Dodge City Raceway Park in Dodge City, Kan., in late May.
“Getting to run for the Ochs Brothers has been one of my dreams,” he said. “To finally get to do that means a lot to me. That was definitely one of the best things this year.
“Winning a championship and three races, plus showing consistency throughout the entire season, I would definitely say this was our best year.”
